It’s daybreak and you’ve snuck out of bed to catch a majestic sunrise. The sun has yet to pour itself onto the quiet bay but it’s already warm. There’s a gentle breath of wind skipping across even sets of mellow waves on the beach below. The same waves you could hear whispering through your open window as you slept last night.
Everyone else is fast asleep as you tiptoe out, surfboard tucked under your arm. With a bit of luck you’ll catch a few waves before they realise you’re out. Not that you need to feel guilty about leaving them. You can practically fall out of bed onto the beach at Killers Bay apartments so you’re never surfing too far away.
Throwing a bowl of bran flakes down your throat before rushing out to nine hours of work; now that does feel a long way away. As you sit together on your terrace eating warm pastries and fresh fruit you couldn’t be any further from the rat race.
By mid-morning you’ve packed your stuff into your inclusive hire car for a short picturesque drive down the coast to Devil’s rock. You plant yourselves on the serene sandy shore and play about in the surf for a few hours catching waves, paddling and body-boarding together. While horse trekking you spy learners on surf camp, kite-surfing and a local restaurant where you tuck into smoky grilled fish.
Lounging in a traditional Moroccan steam bath is about as close to strenuous as it gets in Tagahzout. And your partner’s retreated to a local Hammam while you recline in the shade with a good book. Your young one’s happily occupied too. They’re being entertained by the babysitter just out of earshot but just within sight so you know they’re having fun too.
By evening you’re all curled up together in front of a DVD back at Killers Bay apartments. That short walk back from your sunset picnic below the cliffs almost finished you off. Tomorrow you’ve got your guided surf tour at a secret surf spot followed by an afternoon of peaceful yoga to look forward to. But right now you’re happy, content and so very relaxed.
Before your film’s even finished you’re drifting off into the deepest, most restful sleep of your lives.
